Don't You Give Up On Me
Don’t You Give Up on Me
A few months ago, I woke up with a song stuck in my head. The funny thing was, I couldn't remember what the song was called or even most of the lyrics. All I could remember was this little part:
“Oh oh ooooh oh, there is so much more.”
That was it. Just that little piece playing over and over in my head. The strange thing was that in my dream, I knew the song. I knew what I was hearing, but when I woke up, I couldn't quite put it all together. I spent time trying to figure out what song it was, searching for lyrics and trying to find the one that matched the little piece I couldn't shake.
Eventually, I found it: Don't You Give Up on Me.
And suddenly, the lyrics meant so much more.
At the time, I was working through a situation in my life that I had been praying about for a while. I kept asking God for answers, for clarity, and for some indication of what I was supposed to do next. I thought I was making progress. I thought I was moving forward and finally putting some of it behind me. But then, just when I felt like I was getting somewhere, it would come back up again.
It was frustrating. I wanted answers. I wanted to understand why this situation continued to resurface when I was trying so hard to move forward. And honestly, there were moments when I wondered if my prayers were being answered at all.
Looking back, I think that's what may have triggered this song while I was sleeping. I believe God can use unexpected moments to speak to us, remind us of truths we need to hear, and reach us when we might not be listening for Him. Sometimes, we are so busy searching for answers that we miss the quiet ways He might be trying to reassure us.
When I woke up with that little piece of the song in my head, I didn't immediately understand why it was there. But once I found the song and listened to the rest of the lyrics, it felt like a reminder that God wasn't finished with me or with the story He was writing in my life.
I might not have the answers I wanted. I might not understand why certain things keep coming back around. But maybe I didn't need to have everything figured out in that moment. Maybe I just needed the reminder that there was still more ahead of me.
One line in particular has stayed with me:
“The darker the night gets, the brighter the light hits.”
I think about that line often. Sometimes, life gets hard before we can see where we're going. Sometimes, we find ourselves in seasons we never would have chosen, wondering why things are happening the way they are. We pray, we hope, we try to trust the process, and yet we still find ourselves asking, “God, what are You doing?”
But maybe the darkness isn't the end of the story.
Maybe the difficult seasons are shaping us, preparing us, and leading us somewhere we cannot see just yet. That doesn't mean the hard things suddenly stop hurting. It doesn't mean we have to pretend everything is okay. It means we can hold on to the hope that there is still light ahead.
And sometimes, what comes next helps us understand things we couldn't make sense of before.
God Hasn't Forgotten About You
There have been times when I have prayed for something and wondered if God was listening. Times when I wanted an answer, a sign, or a little glimpse of what was coming next. And while I may not have received the answer I wanted, when I wanted it, that doesn't mean my prayers went unheard.
God hears us, even in the silence.
His answers don't always look the way we imagined. His timing doesn't always align with ours. And His plans don't always make sense when we're standing in the middle of the story.
But the song reminds us:
“You ain't seen what I promised, Child, we're just getting started.”
Just getting started.
Think about that for a moment. What if the disappointment you're experiencing right now isn't the end? What if the door that closed is making room for something you haven't even considered yet? What if the season that feels like a setback is actually preparing you for something more?
We can become so attached to the way we think our lives should unfold that we forget God can work beyond what we can imagine.
That job you didn't get. That relationship that ended. That house that fell through. The plan that didn't work out, no matter how much you wanted it to.
Or maybe your struggle is something deeper. Maybe you're trying to find your way back after a relapse, rebuilding your life after a loss, or simply trying to get through a season that has taken more out of you than you expected.
Whatever it is, I hope you remember this: your current circumstances do not have to define your future.
A closed door doesn't mean there are no more doors to open. An unanswered prayer doesn't mean God has stopped listening. And a difficult chapter doesn't mean your story is over.
We don't always know what God has planned for us. We can't promise ourselves that every disappointment will be replaced by something better in the exact way we hope. But we can choose to keep our hearts open to what He may be doing, even when it looks different from what we expected.
Open Your Hands to What Comes Next
Another part of the song says:
“Open your heart, open your hands, open your eyelids. I've got more dreams, I've got more plans, I've got more blessings.”
I love the idea of opening our hands.
Sometimes, we hold on so tightly to our plans that we leave little room for anything else. We hold on to the job title, the relationship, the timeline, or the picture of what we thought our lives would look like. Letting go can feel like giving up on the very thing we've been praying for.
But maybe opening our hands isn't giving up. Maybe it's trusting God enough to say, “This is what I hoped for, but I'm open to what You have for me.”
It's allowing ourselves to dream again. To hope again. To believe that even when one chapter ends, there are still pages left to write.
Maybe the job you didn't get will lead you to a role you never knew existed. Maybe the relationship you thought was the one will teach you more about yourself, your values, and what you need in a partner. Maybe the plans that fell through will make room for a path you couldn't see before.
That doesn't mean disappointment won't hurt. It doesn't mean we have to move on immediately or pretend we're okay when we're not. We can grieve what we hoped for and still believe there is more ahead of us.
Sometimes, moving forward means accepting that we don't have all the answers yet.
And that's okay.
You're Just Getting Started
So, if you're in a season of waiting, don't give up.
If you're in a season of disappointment, don't give up.
If you're in a season where you're questioning your plans, your purpose, or even what comes next, don't give up.
You don't have to have everything figured out today. You don't have to understand why everything happened the way it did. And you don't have to be able to see the whole picture to take the next step.
Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep showing up for yourself. Keep your heart open to the possibilities you haven't considered yet.
Whether you're at the beginning, the middle, or what feels like the end of a chapter, remember that this moment is not the entirety of your story.
There is still room for growth. There is still room for joy. There is still room for dreams you haven't dreamed yet and blessings you haven't imagined.
The darkness may feel heavy right now, but it doesn't mean the light isn't coming.
God is still working. His plans are still unfolding. And you may be standing closer to a new beginning than you realize.
Don't you give up on Him.
He's not finished with your story.
You're just getting started.
